One of the highlights of planning a new home with a home builder in NJ is your design studio appointment. This is where you get a hands-on look at the selections they offer for the details of your new home, such as kitchen cabinets, countertops, lighting fixtures, flooring and more.

The design studio appointment is exciting, but it can also be a bit overwhelming if you aren’t prepared. Here are 6 things to do before the appointment so you can be ready to enjoy the process to the fullest:

1. Create a written priority list. Which items do you absolutely want to have in your home, and which can you let go if need be?
2. Determine your budget ahead of time. Refer to your priority list when deciding which items fit the budget. It’s easier to make compromises on finishes or details that aren’t a high priority for you.
3. Collect inspirational ideas and photos. Use Pinterest or clip pictures from magazines. Either way, organize your images into separate sections for each part of the house, such as “Exterior,” “Owner’s bath” or “Kitchen.”
4. To take it a step further, you can make a digital or real-life mood board for each room. If you make a mood board on a piece of foam core or sturdy cardboard, you can include fabric swatches and paint samples.

6. Learn what the standard features are for the home you’re building. We have an Included Features sheet that shows what’s available at each design level.

Bonus hint: During your appointment, ask to take photos of your selections as you make them. This will help you remember what you chose and make it easier to decorate your finished home.
