8 “Wicked” Halloween Decorating Tips

Halloween is an exciting time of year for everyone to enjoy! Whether you’re young or old, getting dressed up for trick-or-treating and costume parties is always a blast, and there are endless fall activities for people of all ages. At Schaeffer Family Homes, our favorite way to get in the Halloween spirit is by decorating our homes with spooky spiderwebs, ghastly ghouls and all things haunted! Here’s everything you need to know for making your home the most “wicked” trick-or-treating stop on the block:

1. Fake Spider Webs Galore!

Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without spiderwebs! Head over to the nearest dollar store or craft shop and grab a bunch of fake cobwebs. Not only are fake cobwebs quick and easy-to-use, but they can be utilized in so many different places! Our favorite spots to place our cobwebs are throughout walkway bushes and along the plants and decorations that sit on our doorsteps.

2. Pick Your Palette

When decorating for fall and Halloween, we recommend sticking with a color scheme in each room to maintain a cohesive, yet festive feel. Choose a few colors that complement each other (for example: black, orange and white) and decorate within that color palette for each area. Mantels and fireplaces are a great space for fashioning a colorful Halloween-themed centerpiece at the heart of your home (along with a few cobwebs, perhaps?).

3. DIY or Buy Decorative Flower Pots

Mums are fall’s favorite flower, so swing by your local garden shop and stock up on this seasonal staple! Plant your mums in a decorative Halloween pot to liven up your front yard or doorstep. If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the kids (or you’re just feeling extra festive), you can buy some plain flower pots or tins for your mums and paint them as ghosts, pumpkins, black cats and more!

4. Don’t Forget About Your Front Windows!

Window space is very important when it comes to decorating for all holidays. Adorn your windows with creepy carve-outs, funky orange lights or fake cobwebs to take your space from homey to haunted.

5. Yard Space is Key

Whether your yard is big or small, you should utilize its space! Use outdoor decorations and mysterious lighting to create spooky scenes. Maybe you’ll arrange a few witches around a smokey cauldron or display a headless horseman who’s ready to ride! Don’t be afraid to get creative and creepy with different ideas to make your home the most wicked on the block!

6. Bedeck Your Banister

We love decking out our banisters for the holidays! At the craft store, you can buy all sorts of garland, lights and string to wrap around your banister’s handrails. If you want to keep your banister decorated through Thanksgiving, you can easily adorn it with garland made of fake fall leaves that make a lasting impression. Or, if you’re interested in taking the wicked route, you can use black garland and orange lights for an eerie atmosphere that’s perfect for Halloween.

7. Fun with Front Doors

Front doors aren’t just for wreaths! You can “mummify” your front door with white strips of paper and large googly eyes, or even turn it into a furry monster with fuzzy faux fur and fake teeth! There are endless ways to make your entryway spicy and spooky with wrapping paper or colored painters tape and more. Front doors and patios also offer a great opportunity to create a theme for your haunted home (for example: “The Morgue,” “The Witches Coven,” “The Potions Cellar,” and more!)

8. Of course we couldn’t forget the PUMPKINS!

Real or fake, pumpkins are a necessity when it comes to Halloween. Festoon your doorstep with pumpkins galore! Whether you paint them, carve them, or leave them as-is, pumpkins are vital for getting in the Halloween spirit. Scatter pumpkins of all different shapes, sizes and colors in and around your home to complete your haunted house creation!

Whether you decide to use one, none or ALL of our decorating tips this Halloween, we know your Schaeffer Family Home will look as wicked as ever! Tag us in your decorating photos on Facebook or Instagram @SchaefferFamilyHomes and show us what you’ve got! From everyone at Schaeffer Family Homes, we hope you enjoy a thrilling, chilling and safe Halloween!

Curb Appeal: Preparing Your Home To Sell

When it comes to selling your old home, there’s nothing like a first impression — which means your exterior should be in its been shape ever. When potential homeowners come to visit, it’s important they experience that “special feeling” from the get-go… a beautiful, clean, and depersonalized space can make the magic happen.

From your lawn to your flowers to your gutters, there are so many easy ways to make your outdoor space as appealing as your home’s interior. If you’re unsure where to start, don’t worry! When you work with Schaeffer Family Homes, we’re right behind you to ensure that you stage your home effectively, and feel confident and secure with every decision.

Are you ready to beautify your old home’s exterior so you can settle into your new Schaeffer home? We’re ready too! Take a look at a few of our favorite tips to enhance your curb appeal, win homeowners over, and sell your old home faster than ever:

Lawn: This may go without saying, but caring for your lawn should be one of your biggest (and first) priorities. From mowing the grass to raking leaves to pulling weeds, “grooming” this part of your yard ensures a clean, dignified aura that potential homeowners can feel immediately. The grass is greenest in your own front yard!

Real Estate Signage: There’s almost nothing more noticeable than that “For Sale” sign in your front yard. Of course, potential homeowners are going to see this sign and make instinctive judgments about how both you and your realtor view your home, so make sure the sign is appealing, clean, and represents you well!

Flowers: What says springtime better than vibrant, colorful flowers? Adding pops of color to your exterior, whether on your porch, on the sides of your walkway, or around your mailbox, creates a sense of warmth and liveliness. In the spring, flowers like yellow daffodils, pink peonies, and white tulips bloom beautifully.

Driveway: After years of use, your driveway naturally loses its original spark… The good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get it into tip-top shape — pressure washing your driveway will make it look as good as new without breaking your wallet. When homeowners walk up to your home, they’ll get squeaky clean vibes!

Mailbox: Your mailbox may be one of your favorite staples, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t use a little work. Touch up the post with a fresh coat of paint (you could even repaint your front door with a matching color). All in all, make sure that it looks clean and fresh, and if it’s too worn down, there’s no harm in getting rid of it.

Roof and Gutters: As much as it may feel like a chore, cleaning your roof and gutters will make a world of difference to someone who’s seeing your home for the first time. This means clearing out any branches and debris, reattaching loose gutters, and even replacing the roof if it’s completely necessary.

Photography: Today, about 88 percent of homebuyers start their process online, which means aesthetically pleasing photography puts you at an advantage. Once you’

ve spruced up your outdoor space, enlist the help of a skilled photographer to snap some “glamour shots” that will entice homeowners to come see the real thing!

At Schaeffer Family Homes, our team ensures that your road to move-in day is just as smooth and enjoyable as you deserve. When you stage your home the right way, potential homeowners will be able to envision making it their own — which puts you one step further to settling into your brand new Schaeffer home!

Spring Cleaning Tips for a Fresh Season

Step outside and take a breath of fresh, clean air — spring has arrived! What better way to celebrate the season of new beginnings than by freshening up your Schaeffer Family home? From your window sills to your pillows, small changes can make a big difference in the overall feel of your living space.

When it comes to welcoming a new season around your home, all of us at Schaeffer Family Homes can’t help but feel the festive spirit. This season, make some easy adjustments to your beautiful home to start out the best time of the year right. Here are a few of our favorite tips for spring cleaning in 2019:

spring-cleaning

  1. Welcome Home: Spruce up your outdoor welcome mat by hosing it down and letting it air-dry. Another effective way of stopping dirt in its tracks (no pun intended) is to use a mat on the inside of your door as well. If you already have one, vacuum both sides of it to really get the dirt out for a new season of visitors.
  2. Bubble Fun: Did you know that one of your favorite beverages is also one of the best cleaning agents for your refrigerator? After you’ve thrown out food you don’t want or use, give your appliance a deep clean with a mixture of salt and soda water. The “abrasive texture of the salt” mixes with the bubbles to really scrub grime away.
  3. Dust It Off: Even the most simple of tasks can make a big impact. Dusting off the surfaces of your home, from your coffee table to your kitchen counters to your window sills, can give your entire home a clean aura and feel. With a cloth or store-bought duster, get around places like coffee maker nooks, pictures frames, and vases.
  4. #trashtag: Believe it not, your trash can needs some cleaning love too… Although this might not sound like the most fun chore, you’ll be singing its praises once your trash can is as good as new. Completely empty your kitchen trash can, spray it with a disinfectant, scrub it with a toilet brush, and voila! The smells are long gone.
  5. Bedding Beauty: The place you go to for ultimate relaxation, your bed is one of the most special parts of your home. Refresh this space by switching out thicker, winter sheets and pillow cases for spring ones. Not to mention, a new look — like a light-colored duvet or spring-themed pillows — creates an entirely fresh vibe.
  6. Flower Power: The most prominent sign of spring, fresh flowers make this season so lovable. Whether in your master bedroom, guest bathroom, living room, or kitchen, sweet-smelling flowers like lilacs, tulips, and daffodils make your home feel fresh, light, and beautiful… And most of all, as happy as can be.
  7. Gut Your Garage: It’s easy to let the things in your garage pile up, but it’s difficult to clean it all up… With the official start of spring around the corner, make it a point to tackle the garage! After sorting items into piles (keep, donate, sell, recycle), do a little dusting, sweeping, and wiping down, and it’ll be as good as new in no time.

There’s nothing as sweet as springtime scents and a little bit of sunshine! This season, make sure your Schaeffer Family home feels just as fresh as it does outside with a little bit of cleaning. We can’t wait to see how you spruce up your home! From all of us at Schaeffer Family Homes, have a happy and refreshing spring.

Tips For Staging Your Home to Sell

Moving into a brand new Schaeffer Family home that’s built just for you is one of the most exciting times of your life. But

Effective staging isn’t just for show — in fact, staging your home the right way will ensure that you maximize its sales price. Take a look at a few of our favorite tips and tricks when it comes to the art of staging:

Declutter: First and foremost, it’s crucial to go through every single room in the home to clean up the “clutter zones,” or areas rife with old keepsakes. Either pack or discard of everything to make the space feel open and inviting.

Decide on Furniture: When it comes to the furniture in your home, it’s essential to make a final decision on what should stay and what should go. Always make sure to keep color, style, and function in mind to make the most confident and informed choice, and really see your home through a buyer’s eyes.

new home sale

Accessorize: Decorate with accessories to make your home look its absolute best both in person and in pictures. The vast majority of potential buyers see your home in photos online before they see it in person, so everything you do in your home should be about that crucial first impression.

Stand Out: Make your home appear unique with just a few fun touch-ups. Change the color of your front door to something like red or robin’s egg to stand apart in a neighborhood or hang multiple mirrors on the walls to create a wide open feel.

Keep it Simple: Last but not least, make sure that your home doesn’t appear too personalized, so a buyer can envision making it their very own.

Because a buyer’s first impression could make or break a decision, it’s important to stage your home the right way. When you understand where the eye goes first, as well as what’s pleasant and positive, and what needs a change, you can make the best adjustments to not only impress buyers, but win them over.

When you’re ready to start your new adventure in a Schaeffer Family home in New Jersey, our whole team is right behind you. With the right staging technique, you’ll be well on your way to your dream lifestyle in no time. We can’t wait to work with you to get you moved into a Schaeffer Family Homes community!

Creating a Relaxing and Beautiful Master Suite

Everyone loves to visit model homes, getting to experience a perfectly designed home that you can only dream of! (Who hasn’t envisioned having a luxurious spa bathroom?) While living in a professionally decorated home may not be in your budget, you can use some designer “tricks of the trade” to create memorable spaces for yourself and your family.

To begin with:

  • Timeless design will adapt to a growing family. Beware of anything that’s too trendy.
  • Choose classic finishes and colors for anything permanent (i.e. flooring, wall paneling).
  • Make a statement with furnishings, art, and accessories.

Regardless of its design, your home should reflect you! Especially in the “personal” spaces like the bedrooms. Next to the family room, the master suite is probably the most common family hub. Kids, pets, laundry, toys, stacks of books, art projects… everything winds up here at some point. Yet this space should be your oasis, a sanctuary that is beautiful and practical. Here are some tips for creating an enticing master suite.

  • Look at your basics. How old is your mattress? Your pillows? Your sheets? If you can’t remember, it’s time to replace them. You deserve a good mattress, comfortable pillows and quality bedding.
  • Color theory. The colors you choose matter. Serene hues, like pale blues, greens, lavenders and greys, are soothing. Classic black and white never goes out of style, and is easy to switch around. Browns are warm and comforting.
  • Accessorize. Once you have a color palette and the basics, choose accessories that are useful and relaxing. Good lighting – overhead fixtures and lamps – is practical and decorative. A chaise longue or reclining chair is perfect for creating a cozy reading nook or cuddle corner. If you must have a TV in the bedroom, make it as unobtrusive as possible.
  • Indulge yourself. This is your personal space, so feel free to be whimsical… intense accent colors, animal prints, playful patterns, inspiration from hobbies, travel or a special location. Go for an upholstered headboard in a luxurious fabric or a dramatic wallpaper that feels decadent. It’s your space, make it special.
  • Organization is key. Once the hectic pace of life takes over, you’ll be so grateful that your closet is organized, the dresser is neat, and everything has a place. It requires some discipline, but hanging clothes up and putting things away will make you feel less stressed.
  • The spa bath. The bathroom is a greatway to give yourself a little luxury. Organic materials like marble or granite add a sense of grounded sophistication, while good quality accessories and fixtures can make your master bath feel like it’s in a 4-star hotel. Match your towels to the colors you chose for the bedrooms so there is a sense of continuity.

At Schaeffer Family Homes, we design our master suites to be spacious and comfortable – the perfect base for you to create a space that’s all your own. Learn more at SchaefferHomes.com or call us at 856-208-5118.

Design Trends Making a Comeback

When it comes to interior design, a single trend can be the talk of the town for years and then essentially fall off the planet. Remember avocado-colored furniture and wallpaper borders? Yeah, we don’t want to either… But in 2018, we’re seeing a major comeback happen; you won’t believe the trends that are heating up again with the help of a little modern flare!

In your spacious and comfortable Schaeffer home, your interior design makes you feel just as good as the high-quality structure and building materials that we provide you with. Draw some inspiration from these timeless trends and get ready to give your home a makeover that you’ll love for good!

Living Room

You may know all about the “millennial pink” craze that has taken the nation by feminine storm, but did you know that good old fashioned blue and white is making its way back into homes? This classic color scheme gives off a peaceful, somewhat nautical vibe, and is being revamped with modern patterns and textures in living rooms. Once popular in the 90’s, these colors are happy to be making their way in 2018!

If we’re playing music from the 60’s and 70’s on our iPhones, then why can’t design trends from this time make their way back into our modern lives? Believe it or not, Macrame is all the rage — again! Macrame is beautiful, knotted rope that’s designed in creative ways to make hanging planters, wall hangings, and more. Take a trip back to yesteryear and find a spot on your wall for an ode to the best decades of all!

Bathroom and Kitchen

If it’s hard to believe that brass is back in style, we don’t blame you! This staple of the 1980’s was in such abundance that homeowners eventually wanted to be as far from it as possible. But now, brass doesn’t signify something common — it’s now a sign of luxury. It’s softer, less harsh and shiny, and inexplicably trendy. Try brass fixtures and accents in your bathroom and kitchen for a sleek, sophisticated look.

Although it seems as though all white or all dark, minimal and modern kitchens are the chic way to go, it’s good to know that kitchen colors are coming back! Just like the 50’s and 60’s, cabinets are sporting colors again, this time with fashionable hu

es like classy navy and elegant hunter green. Get ready for the heat of the kitchen as the greatest room in the house is ready to pop again!

Bedroom

You’ve probably thought long and hard about how you want your Schaeffer bedroom to look. If you’re a sucker for light, pretty colors but you’ve been swayed by the ultra-modern color trends of today, we have good news for you: pastels are back! Yes, you heard that right. Light pinks, greens, blues, and oranges are back in style, only this time, they’re understated and calm, giving your space a relaxed, modern vibe that doesn’t feel retro.

“Contemporary wallpaper” may seem like two contradictory terms, but believe it or not, this widely used trend of the past is now coming back into the spotlight! Decorative wallpaper can now be used not just to give color to your walls, but to show your creativity and unique eye for design. Since monotone colors has been in for so long, vibrant modern prints truly highlight your originality. We’re excited about it!
