Featured Employee: Meet Ashley!

From the moment we first meet to the moment we hand over your keys, our team works hard to ensure that your home building journey is as enjoyable as can be. At Schaeffer Family Homes, we’ve done away with the idea that buying a new home means months of stress; instead, we’ve turned the process into something fun.

We believe that the beginning sets the tone for the rest of the way — which is why we’re so happy to have Ashley Fortunato as one of the first people you’ll interact with! As one of our sales specialists, Ashley’s positivity shines through in everything she does, and we can’t wait for you to experience her incredible energy.

Anyone who’s ever met Ashley can instantly sense her kind, caring heart, so it comes as no surprise that prior to joining the Schaeffer family, Ashley worked as a medical assistant as well as a coordinator for a non-profit that helps illness/injury patients coordinate fundraisers. With a lifelong passion for helping others, there’s no one who embodies our mission better than Ashley.

When it comes to her role, Ashley says that she’s most grateful for the supportive work environment that inspires her every day. “Everyone that works for Schaeffer really loves their job, and therefore, goes above and beyond for customers,” Ashley says. “It’s exciting to be part of a family-owned business where you’re able to get to know your customers and help them build their dream homes!”

Before coming into work every morning, Ashley particularly looks forward to learning something new. Whether it be something about the homebuilding process or products on the market (or advice from a colleague!), Ashley is always open to new knowledge and experiences so she can continue to provide the best service possible.

Outside of the office, Ashley is most likely hanging out with her friends and family, and exploring the diverse food scene in Philadelphia. She also loves to spend quality time with her two beautiful rescue dogs, and fosters dogs whenever she can (see, we told you she has a huge heart!)

All of us at Schaeffer Family Homes want to thank Ashley for everything she does for our team and our homeowners! For more information on our homes and communities throughout South Jersey, please give us a call at 856-208-5118. We love working with Ashley, and we know you will too!

Buying Your First Home: Here’s What You Need to Know

You’ve heard there’s no place like home, but the truth is, there’s no place like your first home. Think about it: you’ve just made your biggest financial (and most emotional) decision yet, you’re finally switching from renting to owning, and most importantly, you’re taking a giant step toward the rest of your life… It turns out that your first home really is the most special place in the world.

If you’re thinking of buying a new home or are about to start the process, you’ve probably read up on mortgages, compared new homes vs resale, etc. But do you know what to bring to builder meetings? How about current promotions? Some things get overshadowed by the “big points,” but at Schaeffer Family Homes, we believe the little details matter… So we put together everything you won’t find in a simple internet search:

1) Your First Home is Less Overwhelming

We’re not saying that buying a home isn’t stressful, but the entire process with your first home is typically less overwhelming than with your next. Your first time buying a home, you’re probably not as concerned with getting all of the features and finishes absolutely perfect — but more so just excited and focused on owning your own space in a location that makes you happy.

Pro top: Enjoy every minute of the ride, even the lengthy parts, because it’s all worth it in the end.

2) You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

Do you believe you can’t afford a home you truly love? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. But that’s why we’re here to tell you that you might be able to afford so much more than you think. In fact, you might even up paying less for your mortgage than for your current rent… in a much better space that you own.

Pro tip: You can get a preapproval even while you’re still renting! Go check out where you stand (you might be amazed).

3) “Sooner Rather Than Later” is Your Mantra

When it comes to home ownership, there’s no better time than right now. (Guess all of those “seize the moment” quotes were right…) Of course, with interest rates at a current low point, buying your first home sooner rather than later means you can stop throwing money away (and by that, we mean renting), and start owning something that gives you so much back in return.

Pro tip: Just take the leap! You’ll be glad you did.

 4) Don’t Give Up Your Favorite Things

Of course, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but when it comes to your first home, what’s on the outside matters a whole lot too. Your new home’s location is going to make a difference when it comes to your job and your social life, so make sure to consider convenience — how close are you to stores, restaurants, and bars? How long will it take you to get to work?

Pro tip: It’s okay to experience lifestyle changes (i.e. driving to work for the first time instead of walking), but don’t overlook the certain things you favor the most.

5) Listen To Your Parents

You might be wondering why we’re giving you childhood advice in a blog about owning a home, but hear us out. Bringing someone who knows and loves you (and who you trust) to your builder meetings will help you see things clearly. Whether a parent, a sibling, or another important figure in your life, having someone else’s opinion that you value can make a world of difference.

Pro tip: It’s always okay to sit back, take a deep breath, and consider a new perspective.

 6) Ask Questions

If you’ve ever been told to “ask a lot of questions,” now you finally have a good reason to. We are here to help you throughout this entire process and want to make sure that you are absolutely clear about every detail of building your new home!

Pro tip: You’re the buyer! Don’t be afraid to ask!

Last but not least, we want you to know that this whole process is going to be emotional. Your home is a big deal (the biggest deal, actually), so you’re going to feel a lot of different emotions. But even if you’re doubting everything you’re going through, remember that owning your first home is a feat that should make you proud.

Building your vision from the ground up is so much more than just a process. It’s one of the most special things you can do. Looking to buy your new home in South Jersey? Contact Schaeffer Family Homes at 856-208-5118 to make your first home buying process a breeze!

Featured Floor Plan: Meet the Blake!

Fun Fact: A lot of our floorplans are actually named after real people. Not celebrities or Presidents, but our own employees’ and homeowners’ unique and exuberant children! And our featured floor plan, the Blake, is no exception. Just like the real Blake, this 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom, 2,934 square home, is one that you’ll adore the minute you both meet!

The Blake model boasts incredible curb appeal with its charming exterior. Choose from a portico or a full front porch, add dormers, or even a third floor. The exterior choices on this home are endless. Our Blake model home in Cherry Hill, located at 42 Berlin Rd is currently under construction and will be ready to tour by the end of this year, but until then, we will walk you through the Blake in this blog!!

Past your front door, you’ll find a charming foyer with a living room and a dining room on either side. The dining room, perfect for celebrations and family dinners, leads into a spacious kitchen, complete with an island, a charming breakfast nook, and a butler’s pantry. Best of all, the kitchen flows freely into the family room, which makes cooking and sharing meals together all the more special. Towards the back of the home you will find a powder room and an area that would make a perfect drop zone for coats, backpacks, and everything in between.

Upstairs on the second floor, luxury and leisure await in your spectacular master bedroom, which provides two large walk-in closets and a spa-like bathroom. Beyond your bedroom, you have 3 more spacious bedrooms, a full bathroom, and best of all, an upstairs laundry room.

Last but not least, if you want even more space in your new home, you have the choice to add a third floor that includes an unfinished attic space for additional storage, or finish the space and add a 5th bedroom and bathroom. At Schaeffer Family Homes, we believe that your home should look and feel exactly the way you want it to, so we always make sure that the most important choices are all yours.

From family dinners in the backyard to get-togethers with friends, every moment in your Blake home feels entirely and uniquely like you. If you’re ready to start your greatest adventure yet, Schaeffer Family Homes can’t wait to help you get settled in! For more information, please visit us or give us a call at 856-208-5118.

Spring Cleaning Tips for a Fresh Season

Step outside and take a breath of fresh, clean air — spring has arrived! What better way to celebrate the season of new beginnings than by freshening up your Schaeffer Family home? From your window sills to your pillows, small changes can make a big difference in the overall feel of your living space.

When it comes to welcoming a new season around your home, all of us at Schaeffer Family Homes can’t help but feel the festive spirit. This season, make some easy adjustments to your beautiful home to start out the best time of the year right. Here are a few of our favorite tips for spring cleaning in 2019:

spring-cleaning

  1. Welcome Home: Spruce up your outdoor welcome mat by hosing it down and letting it air-dry. Another effective way of stopping dirt in its tracks (no pun intended) is to use a mat on the inside of your door as well. If you already have one, vacuum both sides of it to really get the dirt out for a new season of visitors.
  2. Bubble Fun: Did you know that one of your favorite beverages is also one of the best cleaning agents for your refrigerator? After you’ve thrown out food you don’t want or use, give your appliance a deep clean with a mixture of salt and soda water. The “abrasive texture of the salt” mixes with the bubbles to really scrub grime away.
  3. Dust It Off: Even the most simple of tasks can make a big impact. Dusting off the surfaces of your home, from your coffee table to your kitchen counters to your window sills, can give your entire home a clean aura and feel. With a cloth or store-bought duster, get around places like coffee maker nooks, pictures frames, and vases.
  4. #trashtag: Believe it not, your trash can needs some cleaning love too… Although this might not sound like the most fun chore, you’ll be singing its praises once your trash can is as good as new. Completely empty your kitchen trash can, spray it with a disinfectant, scrub it with a toilet brush, and voila! The smells are long gone.
  5. Bedding Beauty: The place you go to for ultimate relaxation, your bed is one of the most special parts of your home. Refresh this space by switching out thicker, winter sheets and pillow cases for spring ones. Not to mention, a new look — like a light-colored duvet or spring-themed pillows — creates an entirely fresh vibe.
  6. Flower Power: The most prominent sign of spring, fresh flowers make this season so lovable. Whether in your master bedroom, guest bathroom, living room, or kitchen, sweet-smelling flowers like lilacs, tulips, and daffodils make your home feel fresh, light, and beautiful… And most of all, as happy as can be.
  7. Gut Your Garage: It’s easy to let the things in your garage pile up, but it’s difficult to clean it all up… With the official start of spring around the corner, make it a point to tackle the garage! After sorting items into piles (keep, donate, sell, recycle), do a little dusting, sweeping, and wiping down, and it’ll be as good as new in no time.

There’s nothing as sweet as springtime scents and a little bit of sunshine! This season, make sure your Schaeffer Family home feels just as fresh as it does outside with a little bit of cleaning. We can’t wait to see how you spruce up your home! From all of us at Schaeffer Family Homes, have a happy and refreshing spring.

Employee Spotlight: Meet Krista!

At Schaeffer Family Homes, our friendly and knowledgeable team wants nothing more than to make your days extraordinary. We understand the true meaning of home and family inside and out, and make sure that your journey to move-in day is just as sweet as life in your new home will be.

This week, we’re happy to introduce you to an employee who brings positivity to our office and homeowners everyday. Krista Cipollone, our incredible new home sales specialist, is one of the reasons why your homebuilding process is easy, informative, and fun from start to finish.

After graduating from the University of Scranton in 2015 with degrees in broadcast communication and Spanish, Krista started her career in television production in Philadelphia. While she loved working as an associate producer, she was ready for something more challenging… And luckily so, because that’s how she found her Schaeffer family.

In April 2018, Krista joined our team as a new home sales specialist, truly coming full circle — her mom had always worked in real estate and property management, and Krista always had an interest herself. When it comes to her role, Krista’s most excited about our brand new Carriage Mews community in Berlin Borough, (where she lives in her own Schaeffer home!) and absolutely loves hearing the enthusiasm and excitement in a customer’s voice when they’re talking about the “must-haves” in their dream home.

“It’s special to be part of the process of building a new home,” Krista says. “Buying a home is a big decision, and designing your own home makes it personal! I love taking a role in the process of helping people find their dream home.” We may be biased, but you can trust us when we say that when you’re going through this exciting (and emotional) adventure, there’s no one warmer, more kind, and more insightful than Krista to have on your side.

It’s no surprise that Krista’s just as adventurous and fun-loving outside of Schaeffer… When she’s not in the office helping homeowners, you can find Krista staying active while snowboarding, playing tennis, paddle boarding, bowling, playing ping pong, and traveling, as well as cheering on the Broad Street Bullies as a Philadelphia Flyers Ice Girl.

Krista also loves animals, and volunteers with a West Berlin rescue called Balanced Buddies Res-Q. She says that her dog, Sully, is her absolute pride and joy, and loves extending her affinity for furry friends outside of her home. Just as thoughtful as she is hard-working, Krista’s an incredible addition to our team. We’re so lucky to have you, Krista! Thank you for all that you do for Schaeffer and our homeowners.

For more information on our homes and communities throughout South Jersey, please visit our website or give us a call at 856-208-5118. Krista can’t wait to work with you to help bring your dream home to life!

The top 5 benefits of owning a Schaeffer home vs renting

Selling people on the idea of homeownership isn’t usually too hard. After all, it’s the quintessential American dream. From the sense of security to the sense of community, not to mention the financial benefits, the advantages of owning a home – especially a Schaeffer home – are clear. Our homes combine unmatched value, prime locations, sought-after neighborhoods, and great quality to create the best new homes in South Jersey.

Still on the fence? Totally understandable. Deciding to buy a home is among the biggest financial decisions that many people make. The advisability of buying versus renting depends on many things – location, financial stability, future plans and lifestyle preferences.

Here are a few reasons to consider buying a Schaeffer home instead of renting:

  1. A better home. As the rental market heats up, it’s harder to find a good quality rental. If you want the best home, in the best location, a Schaeffer home is your answer! Every one of our homes is quality built, Energy Star rated, and affordably priced.
  2. New is all you. You have a limited ability to personalize your space as a renter. But as the owner of a Schaeffer home, you can have things just as you want. And we can’t wait to help you personalize the home of your dreams. Wait until you see our state-of-the-art Design Center!
  3. No landlord. As a renter, your monthly payments only benefit your landlord. But mortgage payments made by you build equity for you. Plus, a renter is always at the mercy of the landlord. As a homeowner, the power is in your hands.
  4. Financial predictability. Renting is inherently unstable. Rates can – and will – increase, often based on the whims of the landlord. With a fixed-rate mortgage, your payments are fixed for the life of the loan, a clear advantage over rental market fluctuations.
  5. Tax benefits & savings. When you own a home, part of your mortgage payment goes towards the principal repayment, helping you to build equity. And you’ll enjoy tax deductions on interest payments and property taxes.

Consider the true cost of renting, putting your money into something you don’t actually own. Instead, turn that rent payment into a down payment on a Schaeffer home of your own. Call or visit us now and start investing in your future today!

Featured Team Member: Meet Gail!

“I would give Gail Hopkins a shout out. She is their warranty representative. If I had any issues, she rectified them very efficiently. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with her in that regard.” – Michelle M.

When you’re looking for the right building team, you need people who aren’t only great at what they do, but also love what they do. At Schaeffer Family Homes, our team loves nothing more than helping homeowners like you find and settle into your dream home in the absolute best neighborhood of South Jersey. This week, we’re excited to introduce you to our incredible Construction Administrator, Gail Hopkins!

There’s so much to love about Gail, but it’s her passion for others and what she does that has made such a positive impact on both our team and our homeowners. With over 20 years of experience working in the new home building industry, Gail has brought an invaluable amount of expertise, dedication, and customer care to her role since she joined our team in 2014, and it shows throughout her work day in and day out.

When it comes to the future of Schaeffer Family Homes, Gail says she’s most excited about the chance to build quality homes that are made to last. In her role, she especially loves the opportunity to assist homeowners with building and caring for their dream homes. It’s no surprise that Gail’s family values extend far beyond her work in the office — when she’s not working with us, she’s spending time with her family and 2-year-old grandson.

We’re so happy and proud to have you on our team, Gail! Thank you for all of the positivity you bring to those around you. Gail can’t wait to work with you to help bring your dream home to life!

It’s not too early to start prepping for Thanksgiving!

You look forward to Thanksgiving each November. Whoever hosts always seems to pull it off
without a hitch. Now, you are all settled in your brand new Schaeffer home, and you’ve volunteered
to host this year. And the magnitude of the task has hit you. Don’t sweat it. You can do it – and make
it look effortless – thanks to your state-of-the-art kitchen and party-friendly open floor plan!
Invite early. The key to a stress-free Thanksgiving is to plan early. Once you commit to hosting, the
first thing you need to do is invite every single person you want to come. Even the last minute types
are likely to make Thanksgiving plans early in November, so start putting feelers out there ASAP. In
the meantime, start thinking about where you’re going to put everybody. (Flexible, open floorplans
make this part soooo much easier!)

Be organized. Planning and organizing is imperative. It’s the only way to make sure you don’t find
yourself with missing ingredients, a house that’s a mess, and hours of cooking still to be done when
your guests arrive. Start by making lists of everything you need to do, a schedule for the weeks
leading up to dinner, and shopping lists before you head to the store for ingredients and supplies.
Bonus! Lists let you see everything you need, and let you check things off. (Checking things off is a
really good feeling!)

Plan your menu. Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, and you need a game plan. The first
step? Figure out what’s on the menu. Chances are your guests will want to bring things… you just
have to tell them what you need. Once you have the menu set, start shopping for non-perishables
(e.g. baking ingredients, bread cubes, herbs & spices), and make a corner of your pantry
“Thanksgiving Central”. Having everything in one place will help you keep track.
Cook in advance. Don’t stress out by trying to cook everything on Thanksgiving Day. Create a
timeline, and figure out what can be made ahead of time. Casseroles can be premade. Vegetables
can be chopped and ready to steam. Some things can’t be cooked early, like the turkey, but almost
everything else in the meal can be prepped and ready to just pop on the stove top or into the oven.
Let’s put that brand new kitchen to work!

Set up in advance. Establish your dining space (formal dining room, flex space, even the family room). Figure out if you’re having a sit-down meal or a buffet-style repast. Then, as long as you don’t have to worry about pets or small children upsetting things, set everything up days before the event. That way you won’t be scrambling to find the serving dishes that are somewhere in the basement; cleaning the dust off the extra wine glasses that are on that high shelf in the kitchen, and counting the flatware only to discover
you don’t have enough right before the first
guest rings the bell.

Offer snacks before dinner. Tasty appetizers benefit the cook as much as the guests. Bowls of nuts, some crackers and cheese, and trays of crudité or hot apps scattered throughout the family room, living room or basement rec room will keep them busy munching while you finish up! Keep the kids entertained. For children, it seems like Thanksgiving dinner takes foreveeeer to
land on the table. Keep ‘em occupied with games out in the yard, movies up in the loft or craft projects in the rec room.

Above all, relax and enjoy. Let your guests marvel at the spaciousness of your new Schaeffer home,
while you perform culinary magic in your new kitchen! Learn more about our holiday-friendly
homes at Schaeffer Homes.
