When it comes to your new home search, there’s no such thing as “starting too soon.”
Whether you plan to build your new home next year or five years down the road, now is always the perfect time to start looking. After all, it’s likely one of the biggest purchases you’ll make in your lifetime… and unless you’re Bill Gates or Elon Musk, it should be treated that way!
Choosing your builder, your floorplan and your new home’s location takes time and research. Nowadays, most of us won’t even eat at a new restaurant without Googling the full menu and combing through reviews on Yelp! While finding a new home may be a quick pursuit for some, building your dream home can (and should) be a lengthier exploration. Every builder you meet should provide you with the proper tools to make informed decisions throughout your search.
At Schaeffer Family Homes, our New Home Specialists strive to provide you with a full understanding of our building processes, pricing, timeframes and included features. We know the importance of being honest and realistic when setting expectations for building your dream home!
The move-in time frame can vary from builder to builder based on many factors. When you build in a Schaeffer Family Homes community, the process typically takes between 7 to 10 months from the Agreement of Sale. On the other hand, we also offer the option to build through our “Build On Your Lot Program,” which is generally a 10 to 12 month time frame from the Agreement of Sale. “Build On Your Lot” offers you the flexibility to build where you want in South Jersey, as long as you have a piece of land to build on!
Most homeowners who’ve built through our “Build On Your Lot” program came to us without one key element: a homesite! Fortunately, our Land Acquisition Specialist, Josh Adams is available to assist you in finding a homesite that works for your budget and needs. Finding a homesite is where time and patience is essential. Depending on where you’d like to live and what you desire in a property, it’s not always as simple as it seems. Some areas of South Jersey don’t have many buildable homesites available, and even if you’re looking in an area with an abundance, you may feel that none of them are the right fit for your new home. Once you do find your ideal homesite, it still takes about 10 months from signing the Agreement of Sale until you can move into your new home!
Now, we already know what you’re thinking… “So, once I have my homesite, why would it take 10 months to build a home?”
Well, there are many factors that go into the “Build On Your Lot” process. Unlike building in a community (where our homesites are “turnkey” and fully improved), this process starts with a 60-day due diligence period and a homesite inspection. Following the homesite inspection, we’ll need to get the proper building permits through your township. From there, we also need to fully improve your homesite prior to construction. Your home is then hand-crafted with great care over a 4 to 6-month period. Seems lengthy, but you know what they say… “If you don’t take the time to do it right, when will you take the time to do it over?”
Nevertheless, whether you build with Schaeffer Family Homes or not, we want you to be equipped with the tools you need to feel confident in your final decision. You may be able to find a new home tomorrow, but discovering your dream home could be a different story!

Selling people on the idea of homeownership isn’t usually too hard. After all, it’s the quintessential American dream. From the sense of security to the sense of community, not to mention the financial benefits, the advantages of owning a home – especially a Schaeffer home – are clear. Our homes combine unmatched value, prime locations, sought-after neighborhoods, and great quality to create the best new homes in South Jersey.
Still on the fence? Totally understandable. Deciding to buy a home is among the biggest financial decisions that many people make. The advisability of buying versus renting depends on many things – location, financial stability, future plans and lifestyle preferences.
Here are a few reasons to consider buying a Schaeffer home instead of renting:
Consider the true cost of renting, putting your money into something you don’t actually own. Instead, turn that rent payment into a down payment on a Schaeffer home of your own. Call or visit us now and start investing in your future today!
There are few things more special than sharing the feeling of home with your family. Between milestones and everyday moments, your home is the safest and most comforting place in the world. Only someone who lives and breathes the value of family knows how to build the homes that families deserve, and we’re proud to say that at Schaeffer Family Homes, that someone is none other than our wonderful leader, Jason Schaeffer.
When he first stepped into his role, the first thing that Jason did was incorporate the word “family” into the company name. “We are truly a family company. My mother still works for the company, as do my brother and wife. We have many employees who have been with us for decades and all of our employees are treated as family.” Best of all, when you buy a home with us, you become a lasting part of this Schaeffer family.
Before purchasing the family business from his mother and father in 2006, Jason worked in construction as a service and warranty manager, a sales manager, and eventually an operations manager for many years, in which he oversaw about 1,000 homes being built. Everything he’s learned about the industry through his past experiences have helped to shape his role today, and we’re grateful for the chance to learn from him every day!
Since the very beginning, Jason has put a significant emphasis on exceptional customer service. The happiness of his homeowners is his number one priority, which all starts with a rewarding building experience. Because GuildQuality provides Schaeffer Family Homes with real market research from homeowners, Jason pays special attention to what you say, so he can ensure that the work he does significantly enhances your life.
Having grown up in Berlin Borough, Jason has always been close to where our headquarters and design center are today. After spending time traveling and working after college, Jason settled into the new home industry and has been here ever since. Jason married his high school sweetheart, moved to beautiful Haddonfield, and lives there now with his wife and three sons.
It’s no surprise that Jason’s love of family and community doesn’t stop when he’s not in the office. In fact, his favorite thing to do in his free time is to enjoy moments with his family, whether that’s going on trips, relaxing at home, or attending his children’s sporting or music events. He also pursues aviation — did you know that Jason is a private pilot? If he weren’t the owner of Schaeffer Family Homes, he’d be flying planes!
When it comes to the heart and soul of your home, there are no better hands to be in than Jason’s. With an unmatched eye for aesthetics, design, and function (fun fact: Jason was given a scholarship to attend the Accademia di Bella Arti in Florence and was a professional sculptor after college), and an immense amount of love and care for his work and his homeowners, Jason is the co-pilot you want on your homebuilding journey.
All of us at Schaeffer Family Homes would love to thank Jason for being the greatest leader and inspiration of all. Our work is a fulfilling adventure each and every day, due in large part to the man that helps to make the magic happen.
